Double surface grinding, double-sided surface grinding

A high-performance double surface grinding machine for parts up to Ø 650 mm is in operation since January 2014. We are the first contract manufacturer in Europe in surface grinding with this machine configuration.

Double Surface grinding or double-sided surface grinding is used for machining of components that require extremely good flatness and outstanding thickness consistency from face to face.

The difference between single-sided surface grinding and double-sided surface grinding

Often there are stresses present in the surface layers of the material particularly in the case of rolled sheets, embossed and forged components, hardened or tempered parts as well as cast components.

With unilateral surface grinding on the relevant side of the material, stresses in the surface of the material are released. This gives a lot of machined components a small but often relevant distortion, preventing the required surface flatness.

Through simultaneous grinding of both outer planar surfaces this distortion is neutralised and the components are especially even after processing.

In addition, conventional single-sided surface grinding is a selectively hot process. Because of the small contact surface between grinding wheel and workpiece very high temperatures of up to 740°C are reached for a short period of time. In contrast, double-sided surface grinding is a cold machining process in which the entire surface area of several components comes into contact with the actively cooled grinding wheels. The maximum surface temperatures rarely exceeds 35°C.

The cold double-surface grinding is much gentler on the components than hot conventional single-sided surface grinding. The components are machined as gently as possible to achieve the highest possible accuracy.

Materials

During double-sided surface grinding component retainers are used to hold the workpieces between the grinding wheels. This makes this grinding process especially suitable for non-magnetic metals, as well as for ceramics, Glass, Plastic and Graphite, although magnetic steel can be done as well.

Quality

The desired component qualities are very strongly influenced by the abrasive materials. With double-sided surface grinding the following qualities can typically be achieved:

Thickness tolerance+- 0.005 mm(5µm)
Flatness0.002 mm(2µm)
Parallelism0.001 mm(1µm)
Surface roughness3 Rz
